From the Desk of
the Grand Knight
Council Meeting
Thursday, July 13th, 2023 – 7:00 PM
Brother Knights,
As July is upon us, so is the time to bring the new officers to the council, with this new set of officers a new Grand Knight. I am pleased and honored to introduce Doug Zuidema as your next Grand Knight of Council 706. Doug has served as Deputy Knight throughout my 5-year term as Grand Knight. I want to thank Doug for stepping up into the role of Deputy Grand Knight and for all that he has done for me and the Knights of Columbus. Doug has always been there to assist in any capacity that he has been called to do. If you see Doug or any of the other officers around, please thank them for their service and for their future service.
I’m lucky enough to work with a great group of council members at the Knights or out in the community. What is even more impressive is our membership and their families. It was not until I started as Grand Knight that I saw how many members of the Knights and their families in the community were helping people and making this crazy world a better place.
As my term as Grand Knight comes to a close, I reflect on the last 5 years, and it has been a pleasure to work with all the officers and all the extended families that we have at the Knights of Columbus. It amazes me how many people are willing to donate their time and talents to help others. When I’m selfishly thinking to myself, I do enough and don’t need to do that volunteer event. I run into a fellow Knight or family member of a Knight at the council that just spent the last day or two in a nursing home with a sick member of the council or group that just worked a food truck or a group that worked the breakfast at First Congressional Church. And I remind myself, choose to give rather than receive, and you will be rewarded when it matters. Thank you all who have assisted me in the Grand Knight position, and I will miss serving as Grand Knight, but you have a great candidate in Doug to keep the Knights moving in the right direction. Good luck, Doug! We have a stellar lineup of candidates for the next fraternal year; see the listing of officers below. Please make sure you thank your council members when you see them; it is a very rewarding job but does take some work and time away from the family.

Our Lenten season mission to help support Brother Michael Caughey, attending seminary in Lincoln, Nebraska, is complete, and we have reached our goal of $10,000.00. The check was presented to Michael at the Council Hall last Wednesday. He was very gracious and wanted me to thank all of you that he could not thank personally. I would also like to thank all of you for your help in reaching this goal and thanks for helping put another young man one step closer to the priesthood and reaching his goal of serving God.
Council meetings will be held on the second Thursday of each month, and everybody is welcome and encouraged to join us for our monthly meeting. This month our council meeting will be the installation officers on July 13th @ 7 pm.
I hope all Brother Knights and their families are doing well, but for those that are going through tough times, please pray for them. See the members in need on the website and keep them in your prayers. I would ask that you add to your prayers that God may guide our leaders and all of us to make the place we live in better than the day before. I believe that all of us can make a difference, especially in our own community; it starts with each one of us.

Jokes and Reflections
Family Story
Grandma was a terrible cook and one gathering at her home she served bean soup that was over salted.
Little grandson Tommy saw everyone at the table struggling to eat it so he piped up, “Could someone pass me the salt?” and the entire group broke out laughing — except Grandma.
On the way home, the family was discussing the terrible meal and again Tommy had a funny quip.
Tommy’s father, in grandma’s defense, said “Grandma does serve food that will stick to your ribs (a euphemism for it’s nutritious)”
Tommy replied, “Yeah, you can’t even throw it up!”
Book Sales
In the United States, a book titled: “How To Change Your Wife In 30 Days”, sold 50 million copies in one week, before the author discovered that the title has a spelling error!
The correct title was: “How To Change Your Life In 30 Days”.
After the correction, for a whole month, only 2 copies were sold.
